Body modification...

Body Modification...

Why do we modify the way we look? Well, usually its because we believe altering ourselves in some way, shape or form will enhance our appearance. Is this always the case though? I think it depends on the extremes to which one goes...but people also modify the way they look for religious reasons, such as circumcision, and also i think to fit in with their friends or crowd...for example, if any of you have ever been to The Canal Club or The Planet, a lot of the people who go often have piercings and/or tattoos, simply because it helps them conform to the standards of their peers.

In response to this blog, i agree that too many piercings or tattoos can look tacky and give the wrong impression, though of course it depends on one's own preference. Society is judgemental, and we can't escape that, but having a mass of tattoos and piercings can draw attention to you for the wrong reasons, and i don't always think it looks particularly attractive. I have my ears pierced, but nothing more than that, and i don't have any tattos. However, i have dyed and bleached my hair so many times i can't remember and i also wear make-up. These too are ways in which we modify ourselves, and i think a little modification can alter peoples' first impressions in a good way, hence the reason people often buy new clothes and have a haircut before an interview.

In relation to this, why then is body modification considered deviant?

Well, most major religions are against it because God created us, and so it is wrong to alter our natural state...also tattoos and piercings are often associated with the lower classes, those who are common and deviant - body modification often gives signs of criminality and mental illness due to the attributes of those associated with it...medical complications can arise and it is often associated with racism bacuse of tribes etc.

In response to this blog, i agree that body modification should definitely be well researched so that people don't have labels attached to them and so that other people do not become offended, and i didn't know that tattoos were originally associated with the upper class. I think this is very interesting because it demonstrates how much society has changed over time...

I searched the internet and this is a site with some scary pictures...and in my opinion most of the people on it look ridiculous!!!! http://modblog.bmezine.com/category/extreme/
