Questionnaire

Questionnaire and Refection...

Age?
18
Sex?
Female
What is your degree subject (both if joint)?
English BA (Hons)
Does ‘Being Bad’ relate well to the other modules you are taking?
Not particularly
If so, how? And if not, why not?
I am doing an English degree, and this relates to English very little. However, i think that the creative writing piece relates more to the degree i am taking...
Have you found ‘Being Bad’ too demanding, too easy, or at an appropriate level?
I think it is at an appropriate level, because though it may appear easy at first, research is required to support ideas, and therefore reading is an essential part of the course.
Do you think the list of topics covered on the module was appropriate?
I do think the topics were appropriate because they question things that are considered morally wrong and allow much room for debate.
Are there any topics not included in the module that you would like to see included?
I think perhaps abortion and euthanasia would make interesting topics because they are very controversial subjects.
Do you think that the format for classes has worked well?
Yes in all i do, though the class was very large in comparison to the other modules so it wasn't always easy to concentrate. I also think Thursday evening was a bad idea because many students do not attend the lecture because the majority go out.
What did you think of the module team?
It is difficult to communicate with them all the time though this can be done by email, and i think Mark Jones helps make the lectures more interesting, becuause i think he is funny.
Do you think it would have been better to have had more:
Small group discussions?
Discussion and debate among the class as a whole?
Information and talk from lecturers?

I think we have had discussion among the class as a whole as well as information and talk from lecturers. I prefer not to have had many small group discussions because i don't really like that format.
The approach taken in the module is interdisciplinary (drawing on perspectives from English Literature, Film Studies, Creative Writing, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Media Studies and Politics): do you think this a useful way of approaching the topics covered in the module?
This is a useful way because it allows us to look at the topics from different perspectives.
Do you think that interdisciplinary modules are a good idea?
I do for the above reason.
Do you think you have benefited from the interdisciplinary approach taken in the module?
I wouldn't say i have benefited or not really, because it hasn't had much effect on me.
Would you like to see more modules that cover this kind of subject matter?
Yes, i think it is a lot more interesting than the subject matter in the majority of my courses!
Are you planning to take the follow-up module PH2004 ‘It Shouldn’t Be Allowed’ at level 2?
I may take it, though i am not sure yet.
Would you recommend ‘Being Bad’ to a friend?
Yes, because it is different from the other modules, and so makes a refreshing change.
Do you think that the blogs (web logs) were a good idea?
Yes i do because it enables us to comment on issues form our points of view, and also debate with others.
What did you think of the other assessments (e.g. would it be better to have one longer assessment rather than two shorter ones?)?
I have enjoyed two short assignments because i have plenty of essays in my other modules!
What have you learned from the module?
I have learned to be more open minded about taboo subjects, and perhaps not to be so judgemental.
What parts of the module have you found most useful and why?
I found the smoking, masturbation and infidelity topics most interesting, and i based my assignments on the latter two, simply because they are viewed as very controversial.
What parts do you think were a waste of time and why?
I didn't really enjoy the bandits and outlaws lecture, the bad cinema lecture and the religious cults lecture because these topics are not as taboo in my opinion, therefore not as interesting!
Are there any other comments you wish to make regarding ‘Being Bad’?
I have enjoyed the module completely and i would recommend it to others!

Abortion...

Abortion...Is It Right?

I completely agree with this blog that this topic will always be controversial...and so too will euthanasia...but i don't have strong feelings either for or against it because i agree that the situation is an important factor...

What can be said in favour of abortion? In agreement with the above blog, if the baby's life is at risk or the child will be born disabled then it is probably for the best...but if the child will have little disability but the parents still don't want to keep it, then perhaps this is cruel...

In contrast to the favourable aspects, there are many reasons why it is believed abortion is wrong...one example is that God created life and so it is not for us to take it away or 'play God' as it were. Many Christians, paticularly Catholics, are in agreement with this, so much so that contraception wasn't allowed, because becoming pregnant was a gift from God. I think this is ridiculous because it would result in babies being born left, right and centre, and i'm sure not all would be wanted...

Abortion should definitely be allowed and not considered 'immoral' in the instance of a rape because this wouldn't be the woman's fault and the unborn baby would just remind her of a great ordeal...

However, as the above blog stated, i do think that people should be more careful about contraception, and if they have worries then take the emergency pill because it is easy enough to get hold of and it would prevent such circumstances!!!

In conclusion, i feel that sex education does need to be taught more because it is a very important part of life and i think it would lower the teenage pregnancy rate...teenage life is difficult enough without a baby!!!

Binge drinking...

Binge Drinking...

Drinking alcohol isn't necessarily a bad thing, as long as it's done in moderation...for example, men can drink up to 21 units of alcohol a week and women 14...and also alcohol is thought to have some positive effects too! For example, it makes the blood less likely to clot and improves the health of the lining of the arteries...for more positive attributes see here.

However, binge drinking stems from social drinking, and according to a government report, it is costing the country £20 billion a year!!!! So why then do we continue to do it??

Binge drinking occurs mainly during the ages of 16 to 24, and has become something of a hobby because it increases peoples' confidence and helps the drinker to feel more relaxed in social situations. However, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages because one can become so drunk that they do not know what they are doing and could possibly lose their belongings (as i have too many times!!!), not be able to get home safely and also forget the previous night's events, which could be dangerous...

I think that the dangers of binge drinking should be advertised more so that younger people are more aware...and remember that if you insist on getting paraletic, you should always make sure there is a group of you - because as they say 'safety in numbers'!

Gambling...

Are You a Gambler???

Gambling can seem a bit of fun when it isn't taken to the extreme. There are all sorts of ways in which we can gamble including placing a bet at the dogs or horseraces, playing a slot machine and even responding to television competitions...even the lottery is a gamble really...so why do people become addicted???

In agreement with the above blog, many enjoy the thrill of winning and maybe consider it a fun way to make extra money. These are positive points, becuase placing a small bet and winning on the odd occasion doesn't harm anybody.

However, if people become addicted, gambling can tear families apart and destroy a person's life! I think it is terrible that the person in the above blog lost somebody they knew through an addiction to this 'sport'. This is an example of the devastating consequences of debt...so i think people should be very careful when they place a bet from now on!!!

As the above blog has stated, gambling is made to look attractive and as a way to earn money when it is advertised on television by celebrities such as Sharon Osbourne, and therefore people are easily fooled!!! I think it is disgusting and that it shouldn't be allowed. Another example of television promoting gambling is the advert for 'foxybingo.com'...and it can seem very appealing...

Gambling has more disadvantages than positive points...for example, when we place a bet on the horses, if the horse becomes hurt, they are often killed...and television competitions such as GMTV have been accused of fraud...so i certainly won't be entering that competition again because i quite often did!!!

So i think you should all be aware of the downfalls associated with gambling next time you play on a machine!!!

Body modification...

Body Modification...

Why do we modify the way we look? Well, usually its because we believe altering ourselves in some way, shape or form will enhance our appearance. Is this always the case though? I think it depends on the extremes to which one goes...but people also modify the way they look for religious reasons, such as circumcision, and also i think to fit in with their friends or crowd...for example, if any of you have ever been to The Canal Club or The Planet, a lot of the people who go often have piercings and/or tattoos, simply because it helps them conform to the standards of their peers.

http://smurfie-badsmurf.blogspot.com/2007/05/body-modification.html.html

In response to this blog, i agree that too many piercings or tattoos can look tacky and give the wrong impression, though of course it depends on one's own preference. Society is judgemental, and we can't escape that, but having a mass of tattoos and piercings can draw attention to you for the wrong reasons, and i don't always think it looks particularly attractive. I have my ears pierced, but nothing more than that, and i don't have any tattos. However, i have dyed and bleached my hair so many times i can't remember and i also wear make-up. These too are ways in which we modify ourselves, and i think a little modification can alter peoples' first impressions in a good way, hence the reason people often buy new clothes and have a haircut before an interview.

In relation to this, why then is body modification considered deviant?

Well, most major religions are against it because God created us, and so it is wrong to alter our natural state...also tattoos and piercings are often associated with the lower classes, those who are common and deviant - body modification often gives signs of criminality and mental illness due to the attributes of those associated with it...medical complications can arise and it is often associated with racism bacuse of tribes etc.

http://aggh.blogspot.com/2007/03/tattoos-and-body-piercing.html

In response to this blog, i agree that body modification should definitely be well researched so that people don't have labels attached to them and so that other people do not become offended, and i didn't know that tattoos were originally associated with the upper class. I think this is very interesting because it demonstrates how much society has changed over time...

I searched the internet and this is a site with some scary pictures...and in my opinion most of the people on it look ridiculous!!!! http://modblog.bmezine.com/category/extreme/

Domestic Abuse...

Domestic Abuse...

In response to this blog, i completely agree that domestic abuse is wrong and shouldn't be accepted...however, i disagree with her saying that these women have no self worth or value of lives!!!! A lot of women who suffer from domestic abuse do not have the confidence to leave, especially if they love their partner and hope for things to improve...

Relatives of mine have suffered from abusive relationships but haven't had the will to leave the relationship immediately because adapting to being alone again takes time...

Abuse may not only take the form of being physical, but can also be mental abuse, which can be equally as bad and equally as wrong!!! Domestic abuse situations often result in the police handling them, which demonstrates very clearly that it is a punishable offence and therefore very bad!!!

I don't think i would ever remain in an abusive relationship, though these things are difficult to predict...but i do think i am strong enough as a person to know i deserve better, which all women suffering from this should realise...but i am a feminist and believe that women are just as good as men, if not better!!!! However, men also suffer from domestic abuse, though it is not as common, and this is just as bad and degrading...

Lying with integrity

Are you a liar???

I agree completely that lying can have positive effects, because when has a little white lie ever hurt anyone??? And as is said, what you don't know won't hurt you!!! I believe that lying so as not to hurt somebody's feelings is justifiable...but how far can we go with terming a lie as justifiable? According to Judaism, a lie is allowed to avoid hurting another and to prevent causing a breach in a relationship.

Lying with evil intent on the other hand is always wrong, regardless of the circumstances!!! For example, lying in court so that somebody else is blamed for a crime committed by yourself is completely unjustified. Lying is definitely a bad thing because we can be jailed for perjury, and so i conclude by saying that all you compulsive liars need to stop telling fibs because it is so annoying - and also embarrassing - when you concoct ridiculous stories (like a few people i know who do this!!!)

Religious Cults...

Religion...are you addicted??

The above blog makes reference to being pestered or harassed by religious figures, which i agree can be annoying. However, i have never myself witnessed an extreme religious cult and i have absolutely nothing against religious people.

I believe in God though i am not particularly religious, for example i don't attend church or anything like that. As society has progressed, religion has become less important and many people profess not to have a faith. This could be due to several reasons such as the fact that religion is regarded as 'unfashionable' as well as not fitting in with conventional lifestyles.

Religion can seem repressive, if we consider the Jewish act observed every week from Friday until Sunday, Shabbat. The whole weekend is dedicated to prayers and religious acts, which can seem daunting, especially for younger children, and if people feel they are pushed into being religious, this may cause them to move away from it.

So on the whole, i think people should feel free to be religious if they want to, but should not be made to feel like they have to convert to a specific way of life, because times have changed a lot from biblical times!

Masturbation

Masturbation...

To all you sinners out there...this act has been known to lead to insanity, dark rings under the eyes, and other terrible maladies.

But i agree with the above blog that there isn't actually any medical evidence for this!!! I think the desire to draw people away from the act stems from the fact it is such a taboo subject, though becoming less so in modern culture. For example, there are no longer any anti-masturbation devices, popular during the twentieth century.

I think this topic will always remain a taboo subject because people just don't feel comfortable discussing it, even though it is a completely normal and harmless act. I certainly wouldn't want to talk about it, and other people are uncomfortable with it as well judging by the amount of people who turned up to the lecture and laughed at almost everything the lecturer said!!!!

Infidelity

Infidelity...

In response to this blog, i agree that infidelity is a bad thing in most cases because feelings are involved, and if hurt, can affect a person in many ways...and yes i agree that polygamy isn't really an option because one may try not to get attached to the other, but if they do, as Tom said, feelings of jealousy will surface as well as other insecurities...As the link explains, polygamy is actually illegal in most countries unless it is done as a religious act (but the topic of religion is a delicate subject and needs to be approached with tact). This would suggest that having more than one partner, i.e. being unfaithful, is wrong!

When people are young, i don't personally believe that trying to sustain a perfect relationship is necessary because i think we should experience things first and enjoy our lives - we are only young once!!! However, i am not condoning infidelity, but simply saying that if we don't believe we can remain faithful, then we shouldn't enter a serious relationship because the partner will get hurt. I do believe in monagamous relationships and believe that when entered they should be taken seriously...

Stalking...

Are You A Stalker???

What constitutes a stalker?? Well, generally it is somebody who follows another around, often causing them distress and feelings of awkwardness...is this fair to do to somebody? Absolutely not because it is invading another's private space and is also often intimidating.Cases can occur with past loves, fans and even just as a result of wanting to pursue an intimate relationship with a person one has known for a while.

In response to the above blog, i agree that the line is blurred and some cases can be completely harmless, unless they turn into an unhealthy obsession. And yes, of course the stalker's mental health is of extreme importance when determining whether he/she poses a threat.

An example of such is the paparazzi, who do not pose a threat to those they follow and snap at every availble opportunity, though it is often used in a derogatory manner...therefore shadowing others definitely is regarded as more of a negative hobby...
Stalking is regarded as a 'crime' so is most certainly an act of 'being bad'!!!

Stealing...Is It Always 'Bad'???

I personally don't agree with stealing/theft/robbing at all, in any circumstances!!! However, some cases are worse than others for several reasons. For example, stealing from a shop doesn't necessarily have a major effect on the company and isn't an act carried out to pursue a vendetta against another person, unlike stealing from a house...I believe this is very wrong because taking a person's personal belongings could have a major impact on their life, and if they are not insured, is likely to cost them a lot to replace the items!!! It is not only money that is important but the items could have a special signifcance if they have memories attached to them...and memories cannot be replaced...

Crimes such as this may seem 'petty' in contrast to others, but if they have an effect on another then i disagree with them strongly...

However, figures such as Robin Hood, who may or may not be real, stole from the rich to give to the poor...i still feel that this is wrong to some extent, but it was an act pursued apparently for the 'greater good', and therefore generally benefitted most without having a major impact on the victims...In this instance i don't feel it is as bad.

Prostitution and Liberation...

Can Sexual Liberation be found in Prostitution?

From a feminist pont of view, i think that some women do use prostitution as a sense of sexual liberation...some of the time, but not in all cases, women become prostitutes to celebrate their bodies and take advantage of men to some extent...

If men were not so interested in sex, then would there be any need for a prostitute...i don't think so. But, women who enjoy the concept of doing anything they want to, such as being a prostitute, can use a man's weakness to her advantage for money or other means...

However, if prostitution didn't have negative connotations then we wouldn't be having this argument, so sexual liberation or not, most people still frown upon this type of behaviour...

Prostitution...

What Constitutes Prostitution?????

When we think of prostitution, the thought that generally comes to mind is a woman who engages in sexual intercourse for money - for example, a search on the web has demonstrated that this is the meaning (link). However, when a man is attracted to another woman and wines and dines her, does he expect sex in return - and would we therefore consider this as prostitution? In my opinion, if the woman 'returns the favour' as so to speak, this may or may not be prostitution:

  • it depends on the woman's feelings - does she want a relationship, but is insecure and feels that engaging in sexual activity will form into a loving relationship? If this is the case, i believe the woman is not prostituting herself

  • However, if the woman generally wants 'fun with no strings attached', i feel this would be a form of prostitution since each person has given something to receive something

So is prostitution a bad thing all of the time - or a bad thing at all....? What do you think?

Smoking...

Smoking...

Is smoking really that much of a sin??? Well, it is certainly addictive, and in this sense, could be considered a "drug" - though, if we believe this, then surely alcohol too is a drug, since this becomes addictive and slowly intoxicates the body causing liver damage...
Smoking is very bad for our health...but we know that, so why is there a continued fascination? This fetish begins from childhood...the peer pressure, trying to fit in etc...but a cigarette is often used in films because it contributes to the character of the individual smoker. For example, smoking is often used as an aid to seduction and sex...and if it is used in this way on television, is it sending out a wrong message to those who watch, particularly younger people who are more impressionable..? This is a different argument but i do think that smokers should try to quit both for their own health, but also for the dangers inflicted on passive smokers...

Bandits and Outlaws!!!

Can bandits and outlaws ever be considered 'heroes' or the 'good guys'?
According to the Oxford English Dictionary Online, the term 'bandit' is described as "One who is proscribed or outlawed; hence, a lawless desperate marauder, a brigand: usually applied to members of the organized gangs which infest the mountainous districts of Italy, Sicily, Spain, Greece, and Turkey." Considering this, one may come to the conclusion that a bandit cannot be a heroic figure of any kind. However, if we look back in history to figures such as Robin Hood, some evidence and opinions contrast this opinion. This character was famous for robbing the rich to feed the poor and fighting against injustice and tyranny...therefore this points to him being the poor peoples' hero!
Similarly Jessie James and "Pretty Boy" Floyd are figures revered by the poorer people in society, those who feel they had injustice done against them. Floyd has been referred to as 'a folk hero to the people of Oklahoma who perceived him as a "Sagebrush Robin Hood", stealing from the rich banks to help the poor eat by buying them groceries and tearing up their mortgages during the robberies.'
In modern use though, the term 'bandit' is associated with 'gangster', which has negative connotations in today's society, because it isn't focused upon the needs of the poor, but criminal activities that often have little justification.

Field Trip

A field trip to a concert or music event such as Glastonbury would be fun because we could camp in big groups, drink and get high - things the majority of us enjoy, yet they are considered 'bad' for our own health as well as others'. However, I think tickets to Glastonbury are fairly expensive and i'm not too sure when the festival takes place.
